What I Remember:
Asking for a room with private bath in French and getting a 2-minute reply...in French.  Nodding politely.  Phrase books only get you into trouble. 
Getting a free 1-way ticket on the chunnel train because it was late arriving back in London…and not being able to use it.
The Eiffel Tower is way too tall and skinny for my taste.   Looks like a damned Erector set.  I’ll stay right here on the lower platform, thank you.
The Louvre is just too big and the line is too long to bother.  There’s better art at the train station.

What I Brought Back:
A huge Monet poster that still sits in the closet for lack of a place to put the stupid thing
