Date: September 1999 (beginning of Spring)

What I Remember:
Blackmailing Ted
What a looooong flight.  Even when you start from San Fran.  15 hours.  Are we there yet?
Waratah Park.  Communing with the ‘roos.  Hey, that’s MY food you’re reaching for, mate!  Seeing “Taz”
The world famous Opera House up close and personal.
Cockatiels are considered pests, like pigeons in the US.   However, in the US one of these ‘pests’ would fetch about $300.
Theo “Looking after me”; taking me on a day-long tour on his weekend off
Swee Lo.  “Hey, they named some stuff in a pink packet after you”
Let’s have a sticky beak.
NOBODY says “G’day, mate”, except Crocodile Dundee.  And only tourists eat Kangaroo meat.
Nancy meeting me in Hawaii for an entire week on the way back.  Splitting time between Waikiki (skip it) and Maui.  Driving to the opposite side of Maui (Road to Hana) on my last day after Nancy went back.  Swimming in the 7 Sacred Pools.  The REAL Hawaii.

What I Brought Back:
A piece of original aboriginal art; Eucalyptus leaves; t-shirt

World famous Sydney Opera House, with the harbor bridge to the right. Cuddly little thing, ain't it?   Most everyone knows the Koala is not actually a bear.  You're not allowed to hold Koalas because they are so endangered. This wall runs the entire length of a beach near Sydney and is dedicated entirely to graffiti art.

At Waratah Park north of Sydney you can hang out with Australia's indigenous critters.  Once the 'roos realize you have food they swarm over you. Taz Spring surfing at Bondi Beach.   The seasons down under are reversed: September is the beginning of Spring, Christmas comes in the middle of Summer.

Although it's difficult to see in this photo, the detail in the model ship is amazing.  It's built entirely by hand and then sold, with the proceeds benefitting a local children's hospital. Cockateels are considered pests in Australia, much like pigeons in the U.S.  These 'pests' would fetch a few hundred bucks each in America. Yes, there are people (of questionable sanity) walking along the top of the Harbor Bridge.  For a mere $30AU you too can experience this adventure.
